I find it easier to empathize with Daley's cops (without for a moment condoning) than with MAGA. Their kids weren't getting draft deferments. 1968 was an extraordinarily trying year from every perspective. But there was solid leadership on both sides of the aisle. Give me Nixon any day over Trump. Nixon played dirty as did LBJ, but they respected the essential ground rules. You do what you can to win an electoral college majority, but you accept the result. Trump and his creatures will not accept defeat this November. And if they capture the executive, legitimately or otherwise, their model will be Orban. I think we are at a far more perilous moment now than we were in 1968. What happens after the election could be truly terrifying.
